About CARSS

CARSS (Call a Ride Sausalito Seniors) is a free transportation program for residents of Sausalito and the Floating Homes ages 60 and older. The rides are provided by vetted volunteers who drive their own cars. Once a quick application is completed, the service is available Monday Wednesday Friday between the hours of 10:00am-2:00pm.  The geographic area is the City of Sausalito, Floating Homes, north to Manzanita bus stop and south to Cavallo Point - no on/off the highway.  If a ride is needed on Tuesday or Thursday 10:00-2:00pm, contact us 2 days ahead.

CARSS was created in 2015 by the Age Friendly Sausalito Task Force as part of the Age Friendly Sausalito Community Plan to address the need for public transportation in the hills and around town.  The only bus routes through the City run along the waterfront and Highway 101, there are no routes that run east to west through the hills.   Rides provided by locals who understand the streets of town and drive vehicles that can navigate the windy roads and steep driveways to Riders front doors is an important improvement over the other types of  transportation available.

ADDING ERRANDS:  During Covid we started offering errands to provide an alternative when someone is not feeling well or concerned about spikes in covid/flu. This can include picking up groceries, medicines, prepared meals, pick up/drop off of laundry/dry cleaning or library items, etc. as long as it is within the designated CARSS geographic area during the scheduled hours.

"It was becoming difficult to rely on friends and neighbors to take me to the store.  I am so grateful to have CARSS - I have my independence back!"   Rider, Ann

CARSS and the World Health Organization

In March 2014, Sausalito became part of the  World Health Organization's (W.H.O.) network of age friendly cities, the first city in Marin County and the third city in the state of California to receive the designation.  As part of the Age Friendly Sausalito Task Force's planning process, a survey of the community was completed and revealed the top needs of residents as they age, falling into three categories - affordable housing, accessible housing and transportation.
